Vacancy Overview
  • Responsible for managing the successful delivery of strategically important, large, complex projects (or programmes of work), or workstreams within major change programmes within the constraints of scope, quality, time and cost, to deliver specified customer requirements.
  • To achieve this, the Senior Project Manager must ensure that the management and support for each project is adequate. Project progress, budget, risks, issues and variances must be monitored and managed through to acceptable business outcomes.
  • The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the project producing a result that is capable of achieving the benefits defined in the Business Case
Nature and Scope
  • Business Change & IT operates a 'pool and assignment' model for its Senior Project Managers.
  • The post-holder will be assigned to projects for finite periods and report to an Assignment Manager / Sponsor, who will manage work activity on a day to day basis and issue objectives for each assignment to allow assessment of individual performance. 
  • A 'Career Manager' will provide career guidance on matters such as skills development and assistance in finding suitable assignments as well as carrying out performance management appraisals and HR processes.
  • The Resource Fulfilment Team will be responsible for scheduling the Senior Project Manager to individual assignments for specific programmes of work. 
  • For any particular assignment, the Senior Project Manager will be required to work closely with the business within the project governance structure, and establish and maintain effective relationships with all key stakeholders.
  • They will need to balance time and priorities in their work activities on a continuous basis. Where guidance is required on priorities, it should usually be sought from the Senior Manager of Portfolio Management & Assurance, the Portfolio Head or a senior business stakeholder. 
Project Scope: 

Typically responsible for the management of medium to high risk projects.

Management responsibilities:
  • Career Manager for circa 5 people
  • Assignment manage a small team on projects
  • Assignment team 5+ including a mix of direct and indirect employees/Contractors.
  • Typically manages project spend up to £3m dependant on the size and complexity of the project
Location:

Senior Project Manager work can usually be performed remotely from the sponsor location, but travel to that location will occasionally be required for meetings being held 'face to face' (i.e. travel to ANY Customers business location could be required).

Principal Accountabilities
  • Definition, documentation and safe execution of large, complex projects adhering to agreed methodologies and standards
  • Prepares and maintains realistic project and quality plans
  • Management of external suppliers where appropriate
  • Effectively estimates cost, timescales and resource requirements for the successful delivery of the project to agreed scope
  • Monitors performance against plan, and takes action where these deviate from agreed tolerances
  • Provides reports to the Project Board and senior management as required and also manages the key messages and expectations of stakeholders
  • Provides effective leadership to the project team ensuring that team members are motivated (high performing team) and developing their skills and experience
  • Allocation of tasks to team members and appraising individual performance against agreed objectives
  • Actively represents the project team, ensuring that effective relationships are built and maintained with the business
  • Agree any delegation and use of Project Assurance roles required by the Project Board
  • Manages risks, including the development of contingency plans
  • Liaison with the management team and/or Project Board to assure the overall direction and integrity of the project / business case / workstream ensuring that key decisions are made in a timely manner and that any change is controlled
  • Ensures that the project is formally closed and lessons learned are captured and actioned

Essential

  • Shows initiative and makes time to ensure general technical competencies and specialisations are kept up-to-date in line with industry developments
  • Advanced knowledge of techniques for planning, monitoring and controlling projects/programmes
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to influence policy formation relevant to own area of expertise
  • Experience of directing large, complex business change / IT projects or concurrent projects
  • Experience in managing projects which are of strategic importance to the company and therefore, involve management of stakeholders with different business imperatives and expectations
  • Experience of delivery of in-house developments and third party products
  • Experience of managing/negotiating with third party providers to ensure project success
  • Working knowledge of project planning tools, e.g. Microsoft Project
Desirable
  • Knowledge of and interest in the Energy Industry
  • Consultancy type skills or experience
  • Business change management skills or experience
  • Good technical IT knowledge with the ability to support or challenge IT subject matter experts
