India hikes passport fees 87.5%
JEDDAH: The Indian government will increase passport fees by nearly 87.5 percent. New fees will increase from SR 180 to SR 282 in Saudi Arabia, excluding service and processing charges. The total cost is estimated to reach SR 307.
First Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh Shasheendra Jain said the new fees are not final and the embassy will make a detailed announcement soon.
According to a Ministry of External Affairs statement issued in India, the hike was necessitated by considerable increase in the last decade in costs relating to establishment, capital expenditure and contractual payment to service providers. Indian government officials decided to increase the fee from existing $ 40 to $ 75 effective Oct. 1.
The last time passport fees were revised was in 2002. The statement said that in the last few years the Indian government initiated a series of reforms in receipt and delivery of passport services in India and abroad. In India, it strengthened services by establishing Passport Serva Kendra offices across the country. Abroad it outsourced the services to private agencies.
In Saudi Arabia, two different outsourcing agencies work in Riyadh and Jeddah.
