Networking Engineer Onboard 5 Star Cruise, USA




    Position Overview :

    The IT Officer (3 to 5 Years) provides technical support for shipboard users in cooperation with IT operations and engineering staff shore side.  This individual is considered an excellent technician and demonstrates strong interpersonal skills.   

    Primary Technical Skills : 

    We are looking for a set of IT engineers to manage IT operations onboard their cruise ships. These IT officers on the sea manage servers, n./w, storage, applications etc. 
    Advanced knowledge of satellite communications technology, VSAT, Stabilized antennas. Ability to perform repair and maintenance on large 2.4 M stabilized antennas and their associated equipment. 
    Experience with fiber optic network devices is a plus 
    Cisco router, switch, and wireless access point experience. Riverbed and Cisco WAAS experience a plus 
    Advanced troubleshooting in Windows operating systems 
    Advanced training on software applications including Carnival specific software applications, and tools and utilities necessary to manage a small IT department 
    Advanced maintenance and administration of network equipment, including the VSAT equipment 
    Ability to install, test, and maintain all associated production systems aboard a ship 
    In-depth knowledge of relevant Carnival Corporation and industry security and anti-virus standards 

    Primary Management Principles :

    Represent and assist shore side IT management 
    Supervise project roll-outs and conduct quality control checks of new technology or enhancements to existing systems to ensure desired operability 
    Directly assist the IT fleet supervisors 
    Communicate IT initiatives to shipboard officers and crew 
    Manage technical support and Assistant IT Officers by establishing goals, setting priorities, assigning tasks and preparing status reports 
    Perform the role of project leader for new builds and dry-docks 
    Maintain the inventory for IT equipment 
    Ensure compliance with fleet standards 
    Continuously improve the onboard IT teams technical and customer service skills.
     
    Qualifications :

    A degree in electrical engineering, computer science or equivalent experience 
    Minimum of two years experience in a support role 
    An understanding of current VSAT technology, stabilized antenna systems 
    Proficiency with Cisco, Microsoft, and Sun Solaris 
    Demonstrated leadership ability 
    Ability to work calmly and quickly under pressure 
    Excellent communication skills, written and verbal 

    Work: Typically on ship for 6 month and 2 months off.  Typical work week is 50 or so hours. Some shift work may be required

    3. Meals: All meals are provided. 
    4. Medical Care: Crew members have access to the ships medical facility for treatment by the ships doctors and nurses. If shore-side treatment is necessary Carnival Cruise Line will make arrangements for the crew member to visit a shore-side facility for treatment. Medical care and any necessary medication is provided free of charge to the crew member. 
    5. Uniforms: Uniforms are provided. IT officers are expected to wear the standard white uniform while on duty and when in guest areas. Casual clothes may be worn in crew areas only. Name tags must be worn at all times. 
    6. Travel: At the start and end of an assignment, all travel to and from the crew members home airport will be arranged. 
    7. Crew Lounge: A crew lounge is available for recreation that offers a gym and an internet cafe. Bar service is available in the evening at reduced prices. IT officers have privileges to be in guest areas.
