The upcoming advances in air travel

NASA has been busy improving jet aircraft, very busy. The new ultra high bypass ratio engine technology will come into practical use on passenger aircraft starting next year. These engines and eventually the new aircraft designs will use up to 70 percent less fuel. That means large passenger aircraft capable of 200 to 300 passenger-mpg. That makes them competitive with even hybrid car technology and much faster.

Since it is so much less expensive to build aircraft and airports than to install long range high speed rail, these advances may stunt the intentions to build a long range high-speed rail network.
